Nectar (tcuya, C) of flowers was sipped sporadically and as a pastime, as among ourselves. The plants mentioned by informants were two species of “paint brush,” Castilleia parviflora Bong. var. douglasii Jepson, and Castilleia pinetorum Fer., both called litcitci (C) or hummingbird. Two explanations of this name were given: (1) The plants were frequented by hummingbirds. (2) Part of the flower looked like a hummingbird’s bill. To sip the nectar the flower was pulled apart.
