The single most striking feature of Yosemite Valley’s architecture is half Dome, rising almost 5000 feet above the Merced River. One of the world’s most unique rock forms, it dominates every view in the upper portion of the Valley, like some great shrine to which come the faithful from every land. Its compelling presence is felt in each season, but in winter a special aura envelopes it. Draped in snow, silhouetted above the Valley headwall, this great rock structure seems remote, unattainable, a temple of the sky beyond the reach of mere mortals.
