Yosemite Indians and Other Sketches (1936) by Mrs. H. J. Taylor

PREFACE

T HE many and interesting queries of tourists concerning Yosemite Indians and early settlers impressed the need of wider and more definite knowledge of the history and development of Yosemite. During my service in the Yosemite Museum Library I frequently met visitors who had been acquainted with one or more pioneers. They gave data regarding these pioneers and likewise related incidents in Yosemite’s development. The fact that first hand information would not much longer be obtainable determined my search for it. T he task proved more serious and difficult than was anticipated.

The effort to find a relative of J. C. Lamon, Yosemite’s first settler, was constant through nearly three years and seemed futile when more than forty letters brought no results, but there came an unexpected and happy surprise. Returning from Europe, two people in their steamer chairs were discussing my persistent and futile efforts. A gentleman who overheard the conversation said, ‘I am the nephew of J. C. Lamon and have been several times in Yosemite.” He became deeply interested in the sketch of his uncle and I regret that he did not live to see it in print. The Yosemite Indians intimately connected with the early history of the Valley have died since this work was begun.

Events are realities only to those who live them. Data in the following sketches were received in greater part from those who shared in these historic episodes.
