What I hear you say is:
1) I want something easy.
2) I want a view.
To get "out of the trees" entirely would take more effort than I think you
want to put in.
I guess then my suggestion would be Lower Cathedral. It's < 3 miles and
can have great views of both Tenaya Lake and Cathedral Peak.
If you get your permit on a Monday there is decent chance...
May Lake is only 1 mile. Nice Lake view. It's pretty simple so you
could drop your pack, setup camp, and then attempt Mt. Hoffman.
(you'd be out of the trees then!) This may be too much for you though???
(the Hoffman part)
If you start at Yose Crk. Campground, you can hike down the creek
until you find some nice spot with a view. This is pretty easy.. I have
seen people with babies camping here... These sites are before you
pass the stream...
Glen Aulin PASSTHRU... you can hike beyond Glen Aulin... and then
when you hit the California Falls (or before) start looking for a nice
spot with a view... this again may be too much for you though...
Alot of people love Lyell Canyon... that is in the trees. but you need only
walk out to the river for nice views.
Those are my suggestions. Look them over and go into the permit
station with a number of options in case stuff is not avail...
Have fun
